Qualifications

Compensation

  • Hourly rate (no fee for service).
  • Inuvik includes pay for 2 hours of administration time every week.

Patient Volume & Practice Model

  • Most appointments are 30 minutes
  • Multi-issue appointments are common
  • Holistic primary care is encouraged
  • Occasional phone appointments, primarily for prescription refills
  • Appointments may be extended to 30 minutes for more complex cases

Schedule & Commitment

  • Clinic is usually 9am-noon, 1pm-5pm
  • Duration: At 4 or 5 shifts

What's On Offer

  • Travel and accommodations fully covered (meals not included)
  • Travel stipend up to $2,000 for locums travelling to Inuvik
  • Locum blocks are typically 1–2 weeks, with longer assignments available
  • Support: Inuvik includes 2 hours of administration time every week.

The Role

  • Standard 12-hour shifts with no on-call requirements.
  • Patient volume typically includes 25-30 in-person patients over a 24-hour period, in addition to approximately 5-15 community call patients within the same timeframe.
  • Shifts are generally scheduled as 12 hours, with occasional 8-hour shifts, though these are rare.

Requirements

  • CCFP (required)
  • ACLS
  • Vulnerable Sector Clearance
  • Comfortable working independently in a rural ER
  • Eligible for licensure in the Northwest Territories
  • CCFP-EM certification is not required

Compensation

Your anesthetic skills will be actively utilized for:

  • Procedural sedations (including a high-caliber endoscopy program)
  • General anesthesia for pediatric dental cases
  • Elective procedures including cesarean sections
  • Visiting specialist cases
  • Epidurals
  • Emergency anesthesia for patients of all ages

Requirements

  • CCFP with GP-Anesthesia training (required)
  • Eligible for NWT licensure

Scope of Practice

Front-line surgical and operative obstetrical skills are foundational to maintaining a high-quality obstetrical program and supporting Emergency Department services. Your scope may include:

  • Cesarean sections
  • Endoscopy
  • Open and/or laparoscopic procedures
  • Procedures within general surgery, urology, orthopedics, plastics, and gynecology

The ESS/OSS physician serves as the local gateway to surgical specialties. Procedures are well supported by the local OR team, with opportunities to scrub in with visiting surgical specialists from Yellowknife.

  • CCFP with ESS or OSS training
  • C-section capability (required)
  • Eligible for licensure in the Northwest Territories

The Role

  • Work in the Emergency Department of the territorial referral hospital in Yellowknife, NT.
  • Emergency Physicians can work exclusively in the ER or combine their ER work with another service such as hospitalist, clinic, or community practice.
  • Standard locum week: 6 shifts in total — typically 2 day shifts, 2 evening shifts, and 2 night shifts. Individual preferences for day or night shifts are taken into consideration.
  • Shift durations: Day Shift 07:00–15:00 (8 hours); Evening Shift 14:00–22:00 (8 hours); Night Shift 22:00–07:00 (9 hours).

Qualifications

  • CCFP-EM or FRCP preferred.
  • CCFP with recent ER experience considered.
  • ACLS and ATLS (or equivalent) required.
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the Northwest Territories.

Compensation

Locum compensation in Yellowknife includes a $2,000 travel stipend plus accommodation provided.
